Street League
In August 2009, SUNEE went into partnership with Street League. The combined delivery model will reach out across the North East offering high quality sports based intervention and personal development opportunities. Impact will be felt in areas of health and fitness, well being, crime and reoffending reduction, social cohesion, community development, education and employment.
Clients must be 16+ and not in education, employment or training are offered a weekly activity programme of football and multi-sport sessions taking place at the five universities in the region, utilising their excellent facilities.
Structured sessions, are offered by full-time qualified staff and provide 1-2-1 support to participants who are aiming to developing their skills and confidence.
We run two types of sessions, ‘open’ or ‘closed’. Open sessions are accessible by any individual who is 16+ and NEET (not in education, employment or training) and take place at a variety of venues across the region.
Closed sessions are those where we work with specific referral agencies and are only accessible for their clients. Activity takes place on a regular basis according to the need of the organisations and the participants. With access to these sessions being restricted we can offer this opportunity to any group working with disadvantaged individuals.
Under the banner of Street Sports, the weekly multi-sport programme offering football and multi-sport sessions, operating 45 weeks of the year and in some cases twice a week is the perfect opportunity to meet people, learn new skills and in turn, build self esteem. It can help break down the barriers that have prevented access to regular sporting activity.
SUNEE Street League aims to benefit the clients by offering:
· Monthly competitive match-days
· National Governing Body qualifications, SUNEE’s endless partnerships and links meaning the client’s choices are limitless.
· SUNEE Street League’s Direction 2 Work (D2W) offers participants personal development and education opportunities. With an integrated theme of sport, it provides an opportunity to get fit and keep people motivated and positive about their future.
· Credit Reward Scheme. Participants are rewarded for improved attendance and commitment by gaining credits which can be traded for high quality sports clothing and equipment.
For the clients involved, it doesn’t just all stop at the workshops. As well as offering a degree of stability, SUNEE looks to create opportunities for them to continue their involvement in sport through links with local community clubs and groups.
The scheme also utilises University students as volunteers. These students help run events which in turn increases the level of volunteering in sport. Students, like the clients, are also encouraged to gain NGB qualifications.
Feedback has been extremely positive, and for some clients, the scheme has been nothing short of life changing.
