Second Chance
The Sport Universities North East England (SUNEE) initiative is already working with Government Office North East on a groundbreaking project engaging reforming drug users into physical activity. At each of the five Universities across the region, The Drugs Intervention Football Programme is held and this programme enables reforming drug users to engage in a sporting activity on a regular basis. Students from the five Universities across the region are tasked with coaching the clients.
In addition to participating in this programme, clients are also able to take coaching courses to become qualified coaches themselves. The aim is that they can feed back into the programme as coaches, gain valuable experience which is hoped will then help them gain paid employment.

YES TO SPORT
This project is to encourage youngsters involved in the Youth Engagement Service to participate in sport. A pilot four day multi-sport programme was run at Durham University, with the ambition of rolling a similar programme out across the North East.
HOMELESS
With Moving On, an organisation that offers advice and support to homeless young people, a football coaching scheme was started. The aim of this was to prepare the team for the BBC Your Game tournament over a 6 week period and we are proud to say Congratulations to the young ladies from the team Geordie Girls, as they went onto win the Regional BBC Your Game Tournament and went through to the National Finals.
With Tyneside Cyrenians, a 12 week programme offering physical activity and well being was developed with Northumbria University, with the option for the participants to use the programme to study towards a relevant NVQ short course.
The positives of these programmes, highlights how sport can be used to be a positive way to motivate and encourage others in similar circumstances and help them begin their journey back into society.
