News | YOUNG HOCKEY LEADERS AWARD PODIUM 2012
Lynsey Edwards, 22, has worked tirelessly as a volunteer during her time at University in order to enhance her own credentials and better her chances of a teaching or coaching job post graduation.
And Lynsey put her volunteering experience to good use in delivering a practical workshop to youngsters which will result in the school pupils receiving a nationally recognised leadership award.
The Podium project, part of SUNEE, Sports Universities North East England, works with school and college pupils giving them the chance to get a number of sports and leadership awards and teaches them the necessities in event management and planning.
Lynsey, who is Teesside University’s Podium scholar said: “The Podium scheme has the youngsters working in the community getting involved with coaching, refereeing and the organising of events.
Speaking at the Young Hockey Leaders Award for the Podium 2012 group, that was held on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th February, Lynsey said: “The children involved today have been to a conference in Sunderland on event management and now they are working towards running and organising the Tees Valley mini-hockey competition for schools in April.
“As part of that the children receive the nationally recognised hockey leadership award because they are organising an event, managing a team and umpiring matches.”
The children take part in the course over four days, the first two working on management, and the other two working on coaching and aswell as been a great opportunity for the youngsters, it is all vital experience for Lynsey.
“It’s great for me because I am looking to go into coaching or teaching so to lead an event is a total new experience for me,” she said.
“When I was younger we could do a sports leadership award but there was nothing specific, this is sport specific and that is really useful.
“Hopefully in years to come I will be teaching and experiences such as this are a great set up for that.”
Charlotte Douglas, 13, from Ian Ramsay School in Stockton said: “Lynsey has been a very good coach, she has been really helpful.”
