VOLUNTEERING WEEK AT NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY

February 22nd-28th was National Student Volunteering Week, celebrating the worthy contributions made by students across the country to their local communities.

The theme of the week was ‘Inspiring futures; connecting communities’, reflecting the value of volunteering to both communities and also to the individual. As Newcastle student volunteer Sam Hockney says, volunteering ‘does look good on your C.V., makes you a better coach and gives you skills like time management, mentoring, and being a role model but most of all it is fun and about giving something back to the local community and enabling those individuals we work with the chance to develop and grow.’

Newcastle’s student volunteer programme is going from strength to strength. Last term, over 260 hours were spent by students volunteering in a variety of projects and activities, with some even going snow tubing or rock climbing. The roles of our student volunteers are diverse, from coaching and officiating to event management and mentoring.

This term, there are many challenging and rewarding projects to get involved with. Volunteers can work with SUNEE Street League, the FA’s Charity of the Year 2010, which uses football to support adults that are Not in Education Employment or Training (NEET). Alternatively, there are opportunities to assist at regional netball, volleyball and indoor rowing finals, as well as at the UK School Games Regional Disability Event. There’s never been a better time to start volunteering!
