The event was organised with the help of the Podium team from Walbottle Campus school, who gained valuable event management experience.
Indoor rowing, kwik cricket, athletics, short tennis and fencing were all offered, with rowing in particular capturing the imagination of many of the children.
‘The noisy dance studio was full of kids – it was very hectic!’ Sarah Todd, Sport Development Officer admitted.
The children were divided into groups, and had half an hour with each sport. The sessions were led by coaches and closely assisted by the Podium team, as well as five student volunteers. ‘The sessions were really energetic, with every child taking part. With the student volunteers joining in too, the children responded really well,’ said Sarah.
The event was planned by the Podium group, who are being taught the key skills needed for successful event management. ‘The Podium students were excellent in assisting with the delivery of the sessions – they were confident in communicating with the kids. They were paired off and each given an activity to assist in delivering, which they all enjoyed,’ Sarah explained.
Both Sarah and Carol Marshall, School Sports Co-ordinator at Walbottle Campus, were impressed by how thoroughly the Podium students organised the event. ‘We’re extremely proud of how hard they worked on the day,’ Sarah said.
‘It was a huge success. Everyone had a fun day and really enjoyed taking part in all activities. It was a pleasure to see so many smiling faces leaving the Sports Centre!’
