News | TEESSIDE SPORT NETBALL TOURNAMENT
The Teesside tournament, formally known as the Jill Bainbridge Netball Tournament, was set up 23 years ago after former student Jill was tragically killed in a car accident. It features Netball teams from colleges from Teesside as well as the Teesside University first and second netball teams.
The Podium 2012 students were asked to put their newly acquired event management skills to the test and help run the event. They were in charge of areas such as score keeping and announcing fixtures.
Teesside University Sports Development Officer, Pip Bell said: “The aim of the tournament is for local college students to come and play netball at the University facilities and help promote the University and the netball club to potential new students.”
The students came from colleges across the Teesside area and went through a number of courses that taught them about event management and planning.
One of the student volunteers, Charlotte Robinson, from Prior Pursglove College, Guisborough said: “We did team management and we got taught how to help out at this event. It benefits us because it gets us a qualification at Teesside University and 20 UCAS points so this is good for my CV.”
“We are setting up an event at college next year.”
