News | MINI-ATHLETICS AT SUNDERLAND UNIVERSITY
Children from different backgrounds across Sunderland have made the most of their summer holidays by attending the course every Tuesday at Raich Carter Sports and Health Centre.
The mini athletics competition consisted of the children being split into teams, who all tackled five different events hoping to come out the winners.
Shaun Pike is one of the coaches who has assisted on the course throughout the summer and explained what the mini athletics competition was all about.
Shaun said: “We wanted to end the course on a high so thought a big competition day would be great for the kids.
“We spilt the kids into teams and they all took turn to compete in every event then at the end we’ll add all the scores up and have a presentation.”
The course has been all about keeping kids active over the summer holidays with different agencies like Positive Futures and Looked after Children taking part.
To mark the end of the programme, all the children that took part got a t-shirt and certificate with six children receiving special awards for their behaviour and progress on the course.
Shaun added: “The competition will help the kids improve their team skills as well as their social skills and will help improve their confidence to take part in future courses.
