She was presented with the award at the annual AU dinner at Hardwick Hall. The award is given to the person who has shown that they have been one of the truly great volunteers over the course of the year.
Michaela, from Newcastle, said: “I didn’t expect to win at all; the award was because I have done over 100 hours of volunteering.
Michaela commented: “The whole volunteering thing is really enjoyable but it’s also very rewarding when you see the kids taking part and getting so much out of the sessions.
The Sport Psychology Masters student first got involved in volunteering through her friends. She commented: “All my friends used to do it so I got into it that way really, and it has been such a massive help.
This award and the hours she has spent volunteering Michaela believes will be beneficial to her future career.
She said: “Post University I would love to think I could get a job in sport, I will take any opportunity which I get.
“While the volunteering does look good on the CV, it’s gave me some opportunities I just didn’t expect and I have really grew in confidence because of it. Michaela also feels that her university decision was the right choice.
She added: “Looking back, Teesside was obviously the right choice for University, the course has been very good, and the volunteering has just added to that.
Finally, Michaela had a message for all future volunteers. She said: “For anyone thinking about getting involved with volunteering I would say do it, it looks good on your CV and you just get so much out of it, the benefits are endless.
And the work SUNEE does is fantastic, back home I never saw anything like it, it’s been a pleasure to be a part of.”
