News | MATCH DAY 9TH FEBRUARY

Street League was recently named FA Charity of the Year 2010 and its popularity showed no signs of waning, pulling in twelve teams in one of the most competitive tournaments so far.

“The day was a massive success with some brilliant football on show and fantastic fair play throughout the day,” said Newcastle Sports Development Officer and the day’s major organiser Sarah Todd.

Some typically north eastern weather never threatened to dampen spirits, as sides from all over the nation’s footballing hotbed competed to lift the trophy.

An enthralling final saw Sudana take on Newcastle Kickz with the Sudanese side edging the match 3-2. The winners certainly knew how to celebrate their first tournament win, bringing a touch of Africa to a rain soaked Longbenton with forward flips and dances to boot.

They weren’t the only winners of the day, with the fair play award picked up by Ashington after showing some impeccable sportsmanship over the day.

SUNEE Street League client and now working with children’s charity Banardo’s, Matty Down was on hand to talk to SUNEE about his involvement in the one of the region’s fastest growing charities.

“I first found about it when a representative was handing out flyers at the Clean Up Ashington day and me and some mates thought we’d give it a go,” said Matty.

“The scheme is a fantastic way to get regular exercise and I’m looking forward to the coaching and volunteering side now.”

“I want to aim for the FA Level 1 coaching badge and give myself a chance to get my life going and really boost my CV.”

As per usual dozens of student volunteers from Northumbria and Newcastle Universities leant a hand to ensure the day ran smoothly and organiser Sarah Todd was delighted with their work.

“Without a doubt the day wouldn’t run as well without the volunteers, they are great with the clients and are such a massive help,” added Todd.

“I think everyone involved has had a fantastic day and the winners (Sudana) deserved it. They brought a smile to everyone’s faces with their dancing and were a contender for the fair play award, so they played in the right way too.”
