News | LOOKED AFTER CHILDREN EVENT AT NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY
Student volunteers oversaw another successful sports event for more than 20 looked-after children on Monday 15th February 2010. The children, who are either in foster care or residential care, spent the morning trying their hands at four different sports in the Sport Centre at Newcastle University.
The sports on offer – football, basketball, street dance and tag rugby – catered to everyone’s tastes. The girls seemed to particularly enjoy the street dance, while some of the boys were inspired by the tag rugby. Sport Development Officer Sarah Todd thinks the taster sessions captured their imaginations: ‘A few of the boys are hoping to join their local rugby club – the event has really sparked their interest in the sport!’
The morning was one of a string of events designed by the SUNEE project to offer the children a break from their often challenging daily routine, as well as using sport as a means through which to make friends and build self-confidence.
Gavin Rickleton, Sports Development Officer for Children’s Services at Northumberland County Council, was appreciative of the sporting opportunities the SUNEE project offers and said, ‘The day was a great success and everything ran very smoothly.’
Sarah was also very happy with the event, and singled out her student volunteers for special praise: ‘The volunteers were fantastic, the day really couldn’t have run without them.’
