News | HIGH 5 NETBALL TOURNAMENT 27TH MAY
The event was organised in partnership between SUNEE and the competition managers with help from the Podium team, a group of school children from Walbottle Campus who are learning the skills of event management. The day started in an unconventional but brilliant way, with Newcastle student volunteer Tarren Smarr leading the children in a group dance to the ‘Glee’ soundtrack as a warm-up!
“It was amazing!” laughed Sarah Todd, Sport Development Officer. “The kids absolutely loved dancing to ‘Glee’ – it was totally different, such a fun start to the day and it put a smile on everyone’s faces!”
As well as the tournament itself, the children – from school years 5 and 6 – were also treated to a top-drawer exhibition match between Northumbria University and Sunderland University. Despite hail interrupting the match, the standard of play left the crowd impressed and inspired!
Durham High School for Girls were the deserving winners of the tournament after a nail biting final against Sacred Heart but throughout the day, fair play was stressed as just as important as winning. St Patrick’s RC were given the fair play award for their commendable attitude to their matches. “All teams were respectful of each other and the umpires, it was great to see that the spirit of fair play wasn’t lost in the regional finals” Sarah added.
All the participants were given t-shirts, medals and certificates to celebrate their part in a very successful and enjoyable day. “Netball and ‘Glee’ – what more can you ask for!” Sarah Todd, SDO for Newcastle university, joked.
