SUNEE STREET LEAGUE MATCH DAY SOUTH - 26TH NOVEMBER 2009

In a fiercely competitive Street League Match Day South on Thursday 26th November, Grangetown once again came out on top.  Since the launch of Street League in August 2009, Grangetown have now won all three Match Days in the south of the region.

It was not straightforward for the Middlesbrough side though, who lost the first game of the tournament to the Misfits.  Seven teams, initially in a league format, contested the tournament with the top four qualifying for semi-finals.

Despite that early setback, Grangetown performed well in the league stages and when not playing, showed good support for their ‘B’ team who were also playing in the tournament.  It was not a great day for the two teams that normally train at Maiden Castle, the Durham and Darlington sides, which were both knocked-out after the league format.

All teams got plenty of pitch-time in the 3-hour tournament, which produced semi-finals between Grangetown and Dyke House as well as Misfits against Gunners.  Grangetown saw off Dyke House 3-1 on pitch two, while Misfits edged-out a close game 3-2 on pitch one.  This set up a repeat of the first game of the tournament for the final.

The final was far from a formality for the two-time champions though, with Misfits scoring a wonder goal from just inside their own half.  However, Grangetown won the final 2-1 to secure their third win in three to maintain their 100% record of tournament wins.

Whilst this was going on, Durham University’s new 3G rubber crumb pitch also played host to a Crossbar Challenge, a penalty shootout and a 2v2 game, designed to allow players to show off their ball skills.

The tournament could not have run so smoothly without the help of the volunteers, some of which have been clients themselves on SUNEE projects like Street League.  Volunteers kept score in the games and manned the stations like the Crossbar Challenge.
